cool calm collected…

If you take a stroll into Angove Street, North Perth you’ll be taken no doubt by this very quaint & decadent little store called Cool Calm  Collected.  It’s a small space filled to over flowing with gorgeous original pieces of pre-loved furniture finds, antiques, bric-a-brac, lighting, accessories & objects de art.  It’s interior styling with quirk, giving great credence to the mix of old, new, vintage & icons of a by-gone era of furniture design.  In short, it’s pretty cool & does owner Alex proud.

Cool Calm Collected – 34 Angove Street – North Perth

Have a great weekend.

bib & tucker…

Last week I headed off to the newest addition at Leighton Beach.  Newer even than the brand new apartments which have fancied up the shoreline down that way of late & an addition which I imagine to be most welcome, especially by its local contingency.  It sits on the beach – right on the beach – is bright, airy, cool & a little bit hip & on this particular day, by the time we left, it was also very happening.  Take note –  it has loos (as in toilets) which have shared wash basins – don’t freak out.

Thought you might like a little look.  All wall murals by local gun, Pippa McManus.

We ate what can only be described as deliciousness.  There was this standout dish of Charred Squid with fennel, almonds & chorizo…

This dish of House Smoked Salmon Pizza with pesto, watercress & crispy capers – who doesn’t love a crispy caper?

Seared Haloumi with quinoa, watermelon, chilli & mint…

For something sweet we tried the house baked sweet, which from memory was a Fig & Apple muffin.  Sharing this was a mistake, should definitely have ordered one each..

The menu is good, certainly tasty & creative & it’s not over priced, a welcome breath of fresh salty sea air.  I think the people will come & they’ll come back.  With views like this why wouldn’t they…

It’s early days for the trio of celeb owners, Eamon Sullivan, Steve Hooker &  Jamie Dwyer but with great views, a relaxed beachside vibe, good service & welcoming faces, not to mention the amazing food coming out of a kitchen headed up by Scott Bridger – it’s ticking a lot of boxes.  It isn’t exactly my local, but I certainly wouldn’t be complaining if it was.

don’t be distracted… this is MKII

Salon MKII is a very groovy little hair salon in North Perth (formerly Distracted of Leederville).  I meant to blog these snaps ages ago but for some reason didn’t get to it, so with the Angove Street Festival running this Sunday I figured it was a good time to have a little look at what’s new in the very old – North Perth.

I love the hint of exposed red brick they incorporated into the interior & this rather archaic looking hair dryer (which could in fact be new) is a feature all to its own & one which I’m assuming works, given it has its own power source – anyone game?

The little window cut out which looks through to the back room is gorgeous & really gives this little salon a homely feel…

It can be hard work sitting around in a hair salon – we’re busy people, working people, eternally time poor & reluctant to give up the hours it takes for a full head of foils, cut & blow dry but here at Salon MKII you can relax.  You’ll get wi-fi offered with a tea & coffee menu & why not – we deserve it!  Keep on working…

Salon MKII Hairdressing – 390 Fitzgerald Street – North Perth

I was at Salon MKII for Urban Walkabout Perth

the iwanoff project…

I don’t know exactly how to describe The Iwanoff Project myself so let me just borrow from the promo material for a moment – ‘an Australian art & design exhibition & an open-for-inspection event of an Iwan Iwanoff home’.  There.  Who is Iwan Iwanoff?  Well he was an architect, Bulgaria born who resided in Perth  from the 1950′s & who designed some rather interesting looking abodes during his illustrious career.  It’s unfortunate he passed away at the ripe young age of 67 because no doubt he would have had a fair few designs in him yet.

The Iwanoff Project put simply is a very novel idea to promote fine architecture, the sale of a house & in its furnishings, fashion & jewellery, sculpture & artwork – promote our very own home-grown & national artisans – then open the whole house up to the public & make it all for sale.  Judging by the number of heads through the doors this kind of event in Perth is a pretty hot ticket, and I thought a rather quaint way to spend an hour on a Sunday morning. Needless to say I turned up with camera at the ready & was given kind permission to snap away.

For further details & in-depth knowledge on the whole project head over to We Love Perth.  They ran a great interview last week with the Curator of the project Marisia Lukaszewski – one very clever lady.

Have a great week.
